To Proxy or Not to Proxy - How to Overcome the Limits of the Browser

June 16, 2022
Video editing should be a seamless creative process, however, bandwidth restrictions can make editing and Quality Control (QC) workflows harder than they need to be. Accurate.Video Validate enables the user to overcome the limitations of the browser by using proxies.

Proxy files provide a revolutionary way of working from anywhere, so it’s important to understand how they work and the benefits of this approach. During recent product demonstrations with media professionals, we have noticed many misconceptions and assumptions around proxies. There is confusion over the content resolution, as people often question if the proxy file they are being shown is the final high-res version.

Accurate.Video Validate offers users the ability to perform the same QC functions as they would with a high-res file, in a more lightweight environment. It provides a professional solution to efficiently edit raw footage using any computer with a browser. Not only that, but any edits made in a proxy file are frame-accurately replicated in the original media, resulting in accessible, high-quality final video content.

What are proxies?

A proxy is essentially a more manageable version of your high-resolution file. The process works by mirroring the high-resolution content in a lower resolution file, allowing users to make edits quickly and efficiently. The proxy links to the original, and all the edits appear just as they did when working in the proxy version. While operating in this way offers editors significantly more flexibility, some proxy workflows are not suitable for professional media and broadcast requirements. Editors need a professional video, audio, and subtitle framework in order to ensure that edits are compliant with industry standards and that frame accurate edits are applied to the original file.

Faster, Simpler Editing

Validate simplifies the QC  process by allowing the user to review broadcast quality media in real time. You can quickly switch between the proxy and original files and toggle multiple proxies at the same time to compare video qualities. Proxies make the edit and QC process for large files much more practical, taking the strain off your computer and enabling you to work from anywhere with access to a browser.

Alongside the time-saving benefits of proxy files, sharing the content with the wider team is easier to do. By streaming proxies, the user can pick-up and continue editing without downloading the media. Saving a proxy file requires significantly less storage and makes the process of sending files to team members much faster.

Seamless Integration

Accurate.Video’s dynamic timeline is optimised for advanced functionality, with the ability to integrate auto-QC software. Accurate.Video Validate features a frame-accurate metadata display, enabling operators to visually and audibly check for issues. Through this, the user can manage black frames, animation errors, artefacts and more. Overcoming traditional workflow restrictions and maximising capabilities provides opportunities for a deeper level of detail to be achieved.

Working with proxy files streamlines production and delivers the best video editing experience to the user. Validate is a powerful tool, yet tremendously simple to use, giving the user complete control of their editing and QC process. Using proxies results in a smoother editing process, making the post-production environment more efficient without being restricted by browser capabilities.
